Wrth Ddyfod o’r Gwyl Mabsant
Whilst Returning from the Parish-Wake
Geiriau/Words: Hugh Jones ‘Huw Jones o Langwm’ (c.1720–1782) Alaw/Melody: ‘Neithiwr ac Echnos’ (Tradd./Trad.)
Dyma flas o’r ‘hen Gymru lawen’ go iawn, mae’n amlwg o ddarllen gweithiau Huw ei fod yn ei flodau ymhell cyn i ddylanwad anghydffurfiaeth biwritanaidd feddianu ar ysbryd cefn gwlad.
This is a wonderfully refreshing glimpse in to the mischevous jollity of rural Welsh life, before the sobering rise of nonconformist puritanism. The song describes, in brow-raising detail, the giggling, frolicking antics of a young couple who leave the party to find some privacy in a stable, only to be discovered by a passer-by. Thankfully the witness decides not to disturb them and leaves the lustful pair to their business.
