Pob Teiladaeth rhag Tlodi
Every Employment to Avoid Poverty

Geiriau/Words: Thomas Edwards ‘Twm o’r Nant’ (1739–1810) Alaw/Melody: ‘Y Ddime Goch’ (Tradd./Trad.)

’Sgwennwyd y gân hon yn wreiddiol fel rhan o anterliwt enwocaf y bardd – ‘Tri Chryfion byd’, ond cymaint oedd hoffter y werin o’r darn yma fel yr argraffwyd hi fel baled ar ei phen ei hun am flynyddoedd wedyn. Mae’n rhestru yr ugeiniau o alwedigaethau oedd gwerin Cymru’r 18fed ganrif yn eu cyflawni i ddianc rhag grafangau tlodi. Roedd Twm ei hun wedi bod yn gariwr coed, tafarnwr, cadwr tollborth, ymysg llawer o bethau eraill, felly roedd o’n sgwennu o brofiad.

Twm o’r Nant was a writer of interludes; musicals performed at fairs and markets on top of carts. He became famous throughout Wales for his turn of phrase and memorable lyrics. However, being a writer did not pay the bills, he practised scores of trades during his life, including hauling timber, pub landlord, tollgate keeper, amongst many others. This song is more or less a list of the trades of 18th century Wales, all served to escape the jaws of poverty.
