Hogyn Gyrru’r Wedd
The Ploughboy

Geiriau/Words: Richard Davies ‘Mynyddog’ (1833–1877) Alaw/Melody: ‘Ye Sons of Albion’ (Tradd./Trad.)

Un o’r llu o ganeuon poblogaidd a gyfieithwyd gan Mynyddog; daeth ei ganeuon yn boblogaidd tu hwnt yn ystod ei fywyd, ac mae rhai ohonynt dal i’w clywed mewn tafarnau hyd heddiw, yn cynnwys ‘Myfanwy’, ac wrth gwrs: ‘Sosban fach’!

This popular Welsh translation of the English folk song ‘The Farmer’s Boy’ is the story of of a poor farm labourer seeking work. He explains to a farmer that he’s the eldest of seven of his widowed mother’s children. The farmer’s wife and daughter takes pity and agrees to employ him. Eventually the farmer and his wife dies, the farm labourer marries their daughter and becomes the owner of the farm. Years later he reminisces about the time he was only a poor ploughboy.
