Hanes y Sesiwn yng Nghymru
The Tale of the Session in Wales

Geiriau/Words: John Jones ‘Jac Glan-y-Gors’ (1766–1821) Alaw/Melody: ‘Diferion o Frandi’ (Tradd./Trad.)

Ers y ddeddf uno ym 1536, Saesneg oedd unig iaith swyddogol Cymru. Golygai hyn mai drwy’r Saesneg byddai materion cyhoeddus yn cael eu cynnal, yn cynnwys busnes y llysoedd. Gyda mwyafrif y barnwyr yn Saeson a’r mwyafrif helaeth o werin y wlad yn uniaith Gymraeg yn y 18fed ganrif, roedd dryswch ieithyddol yn anorfod. A dyma destun dychan y bardd o Gerrigydrudion.

Since the Welsh act of union in 1536, the only official language in Wales was English, despite the fact that the great majority of its people had no command or understanding of it. This song is set in an 18th century court of law in rural Wales, where the linguistic confusion is comically frustrating for the English judge.
